February 2009 Newsday article Saffron United Pipe Band trains a new generation
|
It's a Tuesday night in early February and 9-year-old Aidan McCabe is
meandering around a table in the main room of the Ancient Order of
Hibernians hall in Babylon. Nearby at their own tables, lost in their
own melodies and rhythms, are dozens of other band members, all
contributing to the reverberating cacophony of drumstick taps, mallet
pats and bagpipe moans that fills the hall. It is practice night for the Saffron United Pipe Band, a bagpipe and drum band of children, teens and adults. Teaching and growing The motto on Saffron United's Web site is "Where Piping Lives, Learns and Grows," and the band is dedicated to nurturing its younger members. For five days starting tomorrow, they will host the New York Piping and Drumming School at St. Joseph's School in Babylon through the National Piping Centre in Scotland. The program features the best pipe and drum instructors in the world. |
